One way to define it, popular in times past, was to measure the tyre’s outside diameter and its maximum width when inflated, but this can be misleading. For example, some tyres marked 28" are actually much less than 27 inches in diameter, while 26×1.5 and 26×1½ are two completely different sizes.

Common standard road bike tire sizes are 700c x 23mm which is A standard road tire, indicating a tire diameter of approximately 700mm and a width of 23mm. There are also some uncommon sizes now, such as 510C 500c, 450c, etc.

Nowadays, bicycle tire sizes are all marked according to ETRTO (E uropean T ire and R im T echnical O rganization – or ISO) European standard. However, older English and French tire size dimensions are still used as well. The ETRTO size specification 37-622 indicates the width of 37 mm and the tire inner diameter of 622 mm.

The most important measurement of the tire is the diameter, then the width. The actual outer diameter of the tire may vary based on the tread pattern, so the BDS (bead seat diameter) is the measurement of the inner diameter of the tire. You can find this measurement on the side wall, where you should see two numbers separated by an x (ie: 700×23 or 26×2.10).

The same size bike tire could be found with different numbers in different countries. As cycling has become more global, a standardized approach was needed. While traditional sizing systems are based on the outside diameter of an inflated tire (measured in inches or millimeters), the ISO standard notation uses the diameter of the wheel bead seat in millimeters preceded by the inflated tire width in millimeters.

A cross country bike has a tire measuring 1.9 inches to 2,25-inch width range. All mountain bikes have tires 2.25 inch to 2.4-inch width. But the downhills bike can withstand the abuse of drops as well as a rock garden, are decorated with tires ranging up to3.5 inch wide.

Numbers show the size and width, often the ETRO numbers are also listed, again showing the size and width. Is a 28 inch tire the same as 700c? A 700c tyre has an ETRO diameter of 622mm. Most 28 inch tyres are also 622mm, though some are not so make sure to check the ETRO number on your tyre.

For extreme mountainbiking, we recommend tires at least 2.25-inch wide, for XC 1.90-inch tire, while for road cycling, 23mm is the optimal size, since it reaches a great balance between comfort and low rolling resistance.

195 - This is the maximum width of the tyre, under conditions in which the vehicle is fully loaded, and in our example as you may have guessed, this comes to a maximum of 195 mm. 65 - Represents the ratio between the width and height of the tyre from the rim. In our example it means that the height of the tyre is precisely 65% of the figure of ...
