Calling a ship "she" is common (perhaps because it caries the crew like a mother?). Countries are often accorded sexuality, e.g. "fatherland" (Deutsche Vaterland) or "motherland" (Russia's Rodina). Speaking of a thing as if it were a living being is, likely, a term of affection.

Here are some example sentences using my truck/truck pronouns: Truck went to the park. I went with truck . Truck brought truck's frisbee. At least I think it was airplane . Truck threw the frisbee to airplane .

Aircraft, like ships, can evoke a fair amount of affection on the part of the aircrew, or ship's crew. Until recently, most aircrew (outside of attendants) were male, just as most ship's crew are male. And most men would prefer to personify the subject of their affection as female, not male.

The pronoun that takes the place of the noun 'toy' is it.Example: A boy his age would like a toy for his birthday. It could be a car, a plane, or a truck.

I think you mean usually referred to as "she" rather than "he". I'm be pretty sure that aircraft are much less likely than ships to be assigned any gender at all. Just by the by, I personally find that plural aircrafts rather odd here - I think I might follow it up with a question! – FumbleFingers Oct 31 '11 at 18:42

I've always seen it as "she" because your car, plane, or whatever is your baby, your girl, and "she" will take care of you on that long distance trip, that dangerous flight, whatever. If you give her love (keep up with maintenance and looking good) "she" will take care of you when you need her the most.

"She" referred to any overwhelming and mysterious power that controlled or affected the lives of men. These powers included: women, cars, ships, the Atlantic ocean and even (in one case) the lock on someone's locker. Women and men equally used "she" in reference to these things. The other pronoun "he" referred to men, animals and God.

What are personal pronouns and why do they matter? In English, whether we realize it or not, people frequently refer to us using pronouns when speaking about us. Often, when speaking of a singular human in the third person, these pronouns have a gender implied -- such as “he” to refer to a man/boy or “she” to refer to a woman/girl.

Why would someone put she her after their name? You may have thought or be thinking, why. Well put simply, adding your pronouns (she, her, he, him, they, them, etc.) to your email signature or profile name is an easy, practical and intentional action that you can take to make inclusion part of your everyday culture..

For centuries, poets and pundits have observed that English is missing a word: a gender-neutral, third-person pronoun that could be used in place of he or she when gender is unknown or irrelevant.
