If gas is pouring out of the carb overflow, then the most likely culprit is the float valve is either stuck open or has some debris preventing it from closing. Your carb will have a float in the bowl that rises with the level of gas in the float bowl.

Posted April 15, 2012. I picked up a 1996 RMX 250 that was sitting for 8 years previously. I tore the carb apart and cleaned everything thoroughly and put it all back together. It runs perfect, jetting seems great, and have no issues when it's running. When I turn it off however and put it on the kickstand gas starts leaking out the overflow tube.

Not a lot by any means, but still there, and it's absolutely destroying my fuel efficiency, just due to the fact that when the bike is stood overnight, it's obviously still losing fuel. Taking off the overflow tube, it's coming directly out of the overflow line from the tank; I figured that it would possibly be a crack around the line which I could seal up, but it's not a leak, so much as the bike is literally acting as if the tank is constantly too full.

You might need new clamps and a fuel line in that case. I would recommend having a qualified service tech replace those in that case. Try removal of the seat, looking at the fuel system with the key on to see if you see leaks/fuel pooling there as that might also occur - keep in mind the fuel is pressurized for the injectors.

I'm pretty sure it's fuel leaking out of my overflow tube. It's leaking slowly, but still leaking. I think it's gas because it melted off my "HA" stickers on my fairings (and I don't think oil does that). Any help would be appreciated. Last known maintenance was an oil change, but I noticed the leak before that. Before that, the bike was just sitting around not being used. Click here for maintenance record. A couple pictures of the fuel leak.

A lot of gas coming out of the carb. overflow tube, eng on or off. When the fuel is turned on gas starts coming out of the overflow tube. It doesn't matter if the engine is running or not. The bike will start and run like there is nothing wrong. But, the gas is dripping severly out of that tube.

if its coming out of that tube, its only three possibilities. bad drain plug o-ring, (get a new one) cracked overflow tube (solder it up) float issue (wrong height or dirty carbs making it not close, or maybe a leaky float)
